Care of the
alpaca isn’t difficult. They do get vaccinations once
a year and deworming when necessary and booster shots to ward
off parasites in some parts of the country. Once a year they
are shorn and toe nails trimmed.
What’s
really unique about alpacas is they all go to the bathroom in
the same spot. They use a communal dung pile which makes it
so easy to keep their area clean. Depending on the size area
they are in there could be more than one but they don’t
mess up the whole area. They are also known to go at the same
time. One will go and then all the others will take their turn!
Another nice
quality about them, they are practically odorless. They don’t
attract flies like other animals might, especially when their
area is kept cleaned.
Alpacas are
herd animals therefore they need to have herd buddies. You can’t
keep just one. You can keep approximately five to ten alpacas
per acre, depending on fencing, layout, terrain, rainfall levels
availability of pastureland and other factors.
